I am a 5rd year graduate student of Pharmaceutical Sciences Graduate Program. I am working on protein modification with a block polymer Pluronic to enhance protein intracellular delivery and brain delivery. Protein drugs are potential pharmaceutical agents for the treatment of many central nervous system (CNS) disorders. However, they generally do not cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) due to poor lipophilicity and/or large molecular mass and/or absence of specialized BBB receptor-mediated transport system. In some other cases, penetration of neuronal cell membranes is crucial for proteins to exert the function and provide therapeutic efficacy. My work is to synthesize Pluronic-protein conjugates using degradable or non-degradable linkers, characterize the products using various methods including MALDI-TOF, SDS-PAGE, IEF, WB, ELISA, SPR, AFM and activity assays, and determine the Pluronic-protein intracellular delivery and brain delivery in vitro and in vivo. In particular, I have been working in the following three projects:
I. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) modification by Pluronic for enhanced uptake in and transport across the bovine brain microvessel endothelial cell monolayers (BBMEC).
II. Pluronic-Modified Superoxide Dismutase 1 (SOD1) Attenuates Angiotensin II-Induced Increase in Intracellular Superoxide in Neurons
III. Pluronic modified leptin to across the BBB and for the treatment of obesity.

What do you do when you are not in the lab?

I enjoy my research very much because it fits my curiosity about science and I have chance to meet interesting people in this field. Outside of science, I like to travel, play volleyball and ping pong, and watch movies.
